What we do (cont'd)
Team proofreading.
Comparing live material to dead material by one person reading to another. It is the preferred proofreading method for freshly keyed material over 100 words in length, as well as for any material that has been electronically transferred.

Single proofreading.
Comparing live with dead material performed by one person. Should be restricted to material to which a minimal number of changes have been made.

Fresh Eye.
Checking final page proofs from cover to cover in chronological order—i.e., as a complete package—before sign-off for production, thereby simulating what the user will see upon opening the document. One of the costliest and most delicate tasks in the publication process, it demands an editor who can turn an error around with only minimal change (sometimes only a single word or two), thereby cutting down on expensive AAs and lost time while saving face. A critical quality-control step.
